Rugby 7s rules
New to Rugby or Rugby 7s? It's a fast paced, action packed game and great for a family day out. But don't take our word for it, we have outlined all the basic rules of Rugby 7s here.
Similar to fifteen-a-side rugby, Rugby 7s is regulated by the International Rugby Board (IRB) with several major differences to a standard game:
- There are 7 players on each side, consisting of 3 forwards and 4 backs, each half runs for 7 minutes with a 2 minute break at half time
- As in standard rugby, the scoring is 5 points for a try, 2 for a conversion and 3 for penalties and drop goals. However, all conversions must be made within 40 seconds of the try being scored, as a drop goal, rather than a placed kick
- Unlike standard rugby, the scoring team kicks off to the opposition to allow the other team to get hold of the ball
- Instead of an 8 person scrum, Rugby 7s scrummage takes pce between 3 forwards. Lineouts generally take place between 2 or 3 players only
- Each team is only allowed 5 reserves per game, and can make only 3 changes during each game. If a player receives a yellow card, they are sent to the sin bin for a 2 minute interval (time in play, not real time) rather than 10 minutes
- In the case of a draw, 5 minute halves of sudden death extra time is played until one of the teams scores a try.
These rules ensure that the game is fast moving and free flowing, which is considered the aim of 7s rugby.
